Mobile Crane Operator (Edmonton Industrial Sector)

Industry Demand:
With Alberta’s ongoing oil sands maintenance and construction projects, certified crane operators are in high demand across Edmonton’s industrial parks and refineries.

Compensation Package:

  • Monthly Earnings: 8,200−8,200−10,500
    • Base Rate: 45−45−58/hour
    • Overtime: 1.5x after 8 hours (common 60-hour weeks)
    • Location Premiums: +$5/hr for remote site work
  • Schedule: 14 days on/7 off (common in oil sands) or local 5/2 shifts

Technical Requirements:

  • Certifications:
    • Red Seal Mobile Crane Operator ticket
    • CSTS-09 safety training
    • OSSA or BSO certification for oil sites
  • Equipment Specialization:
    • 90% of work uses 80-300 ton hydraulic cranes
    • Experience with tandem lifts preferred

Daily Operations:

  • 5:30 AM safety meetings at sites like Shell Scotford
  • Coordinating with oil sands maintenance crews
  • Rigging and signaling responsibilities
  • Electronic logbook compliance

Career Path:
Many operators start with city work (35−35−45/hr) before moving to higher-paying oil projects. Union members (IUOE 955) receive additional benefits.
