EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment, shunt trucks, or commercial vehicles.
- Strong communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, outdoor environment and lift/move heavy materials.
- Basic computer proficiency for documentation and inventory systems.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred:
- Prior yard jockey / shunt truck experience in a distribution or logistics environment.
- Forklift certification.
- Knowledge of transportation, logistics, and yard management systems.
- Experience in safety-focused operations or continuous improvement programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Class 5 license with Air Brake Endorsement (or equivalent).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to walk; sit, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs. and operate MHE.
The Shunt Truck Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely movement of trailers and containers within the Distribution Centre (DC) yard and between loading docks. This role ensures the smooth flow of goods by managing trailer positioning, supporting warehouse operations, conducting inspections, and maintaining a clean, organized, and safe yard environment. The ideal candidate is adaptable, safety-focused, and able to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced logistics setting.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESULTS-
Trailer Movement & Shunt Operations
- Safely operate a shunt/switch truck to move trailers between docks, staging areas, and parking zones.
- Perform up to 20+ trailer movements per shift, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Secure trailers for loading/unloading (set wheel chocks, connect/disconnect glad hands, apply seals).
- Spot, organize, and switch trailers as required to support shipping and receiving operations.
- Propose route adjustments or alternative combinations to improve yard flow and minimize delays.
Vehicle & Cargo Inspection
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections on shunt trucks, trailers, and containers (tires, lights, fluids, brakes, belts, and overall condition).
- Identify and report defects or safety concerns to the Supervisor immediately.
- Ensure all equipment is in safe, working order before operation.
Driver Coordination & Communication
- Direct and Assign incoming and outgoing drivers to appropriate dock doors based on scheduling priorities and operational needs
- Collaborate with dispatch, warehouse supervisors, and team leads to optimize trailer movements.
- Communicate clearly with drivers regarding dock availability, yard procedures, and wait times.
- Maintain effective communication to support continuous improvement and operational efficiency.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate trailer inventory, yard logs, and inspection reports.
- Complete and submit required documentation such as trip sheets, inspection forms, and bills of lading.
- Verify transportation-related data for accuracy and compliance with company and DOT standards.
Safety & Maintenance
- Follow all safety regulations, company policies, and Prescribed Work Methods (PWMs).
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure others adhere to safety protocols.
- Maintain a clean, hazard-free yard environment — removing debris, snow, and obstacles as needed.
- Report and escalate any safety violations, incidents, or equipment issues promptly.
- Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Warehouse & Facility Support
- Support warehouse operations during low yard activity, including loading/unloading trailers, order picking, and Inventory management and cycle counts, and general warehouse maintenance and housekeeping
- Perform minor facility maintenance, equipment checks, and yard upkeep (sweeping, signage, lighting)
