    Salary: $35.69/hour

    This position works in the Water – Operations, Maintenance & Construction organizational unit. This is skilled, routine truck driving work in operating vehicles of gross vehicle weight (G.V.W.) of 18,636 kilograms (kg) or greater. The incumbent loads, transports and unloads materials under varying traffic and field conditions; performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections; cleans, checks and performs light servicing work; maintains and updates simple records and work reports. May supervise one or more subordinates engaged in loading or unloading materials, tools and equipment. The work is distinguished from that of lower level Truck Driver classifications by the greater responsibility in operating larger and/or more complex equipment. Considerable independence of action and judgment is exercised while remaining within defined operating limits, methods and procedures. Work is reviewed and evaluated by a supervisor in terms of ability to operate the vehicle safely and efficiently, and to meet production norms with a minimum of continuous direct supervision. Performs related work as required.

    Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and considerable related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment. Considerable knowledge of the proper methods used in loading, securing, transporting and unloading of materials; Municipal Street layout and related departmental operations. Ability to communicate and understand oral and written instructions; maintain and update simple records, reports and enter electronic data; supervise one or more subordinates performing loading or unloading tasks. Mechanical aptitude to perform minor servicing tasks on large vehicles. Skill in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment under difficult driving conditions. Sufficient strength and manual agility to perform manual work. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement is required.     Join our Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mechanic Trainee Program and gain hands-on experience working with light rail trains! This role provides practical training in diagnosing issues, developing solutions, and analyzing data to maintain and improve rail systems. Over the 12-month training program, you will learn to fully maintain the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) fleet, including inspecting, repairing, overhauling, and rebuilding entire vehicles, as well as individual components and subsystems. With dedicated support and hands-on training, you will develop the expertise needed to progress from trainee to Journeyperson 1. Primary duties include:

    • Install and test electrical components such as electrical heaters, control panels, switches, public address systems, electrical motors, electrical fans, compressors, and generating apparatus.
    • Identify malfunctions and performance maintenance requirements through periodic inspections, operational testing, and operator reports.
    • Carry out all maintenance activities and tasks related to inspection, overhaul, repair, rebuild or replacement of apparatus and components of LRV’s deemed necessary by the Foreperson.
    • Perform operational tests on vehicles after modifications to verify safe and efficient performance.
    • Inspect equipment, prepare work estimates, and complete post-work documentation, ensuring all required records are accurate and finalized.

    Note: Upon successful completion of the 12-month Trainee Program, you will continue your employment with the City and be retained and compensated at Step 2 pay Journeyperson 1 Electro-Mechanic in accordance with clause 402.14 in the ATU Local 583 collective agreement.

    Qualifications

    • A related Journeyperson Certificate in one of the following trades: Truck and Transport Mechanic (On-Road), Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic (Off-Road), Heavy Equipment Technician, Electric Motor Systems Technician, Automotive Service Technician OR;
    • A completed 2-year Electronics Engineering Technology diploma and Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) designation.
    • A valid Class 5 Drivers License with no more than 6 demerits, and no suspensions or charges pending.
    • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary Operator’s Permit.
    • Previous experience with LRV equipment and/or a High School diploma is an asset but not required.
    • LRT Mechanic Trainees (Electro-Mechanic) must complete, pass, and maintain computer-based modules, LRV rule books, and LRV operator’s license without passengers.
    • You bring strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities, along with a proven capacity for independent learning and data analysis.


    Working Conditions: 
    This role is based in a garage environment with exposure to vehicle fumes, heavy equipment, noise, and dust. It sometimes involves working in tight spaces, awkward positions, and regularly lifting 20 kg.

    Pre-employment Requirements

    • A security clearance will be conducted.
    • Successful applicants will be required to pass and maintain a Class 2 medical test.
    • Applicants will be assessed for appropriate skills. A minimum of 80% on an LRV electro-mechanical aptitude assessment exam is required to be considered for an interview. Only 1 aptitude test may be completed within a 12-month period.
    • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

    Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

    Days of Work: Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday, must be available to work evenings, nights and weekends.
